Perth (Australia) (AFP): Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc scripted history in the much famed Ashes by becoming the first ever left arm seamer to scalp 100 wickets in the high octane Test series between the age old rivals.
Playing his Ashes Test, Starc got to the 100- wicket milestone in the series opener at Perth; clocking an impressive 26.7 average and a meagre strike rate of 44.9.Notably, his strike rate is the best among all bowlers to get to the exclusive 100-wicket Ashes club.
Mitch Starc became the 13th Australian bowler to pick up a century of wickets in the Ashes, joining an elite club of Aussie greats like Shane Warne (195) , Glen McGrath ( 157), Denis Lillee ( 128) and Nathan Lyon (110).
Starc is just behind Nathan Lyon (110) among the active Australian cricketers on the all time Ashes wicket taking charts.
For the record, no other left-armer had ever scalped 100 wickets in the Ashes before Starc.
Mitchell Johnson had the best tally among left-arm bowlers in the storied series with 87 wickets.
Spearheading Australia's pace attack in the absence of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood ; the left arm speed merchant wreaked through the England batting lineup in the Ashes series opener on a juicy Perth deck; registering a career best haul (7-58)
Starc tormentedEngland's top order, scalping openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley and batting mainstay Joe Root before lunch..
Post lunch, Mitch ran through England's middle order; picking up Ben Stokes, Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson before cleaning up Mark Wood to register a career best haul of 7 for 58 !!
Starc's 7 wicket haul inflicted England's batting collapse as the visitors were bowled out for a paltry 172 in their first innings in the series opener at Perth.
Renowned for his lightning quick pace and lethal swing, Mitchell Starc is hailed as one of Australia’s greatest seamers and occupies the 4th spot (409 Test scalps) in the nation’s Test wicket-taking charts. His record in the white ball formats as an outright strike weapon is exceptional, leading Australia to multiple ICC WC title triumphs.
